Eichab and Mentile crowned 2015 national chess champions

CM Charles Eichab won his 5th National title at the 2015 National Chess Championship held in the capital over the Easter weekend. He finished with an amazing 6 out of 7 score after drawing against Josef Nitzborn and Simon Shidolo and defeating all his other competitors. In second place tied with Eichab was CM Otto Nakapunda also with 6 out of 7. Nakapunda lost to Eichab in an equally matched game in round 4. In the final round of the competition, Josef Nitzborn drew with the champion to secure the bronze medal. Nitzborn completed the tournament on 5.5 out of 7.

The women's section saw a poor turnout this year with only four ladies entered to compete for the prestigious Women's National Chess Championship title. Lishen Mentile in this section walked away with top honors after defeating her opponents who all formed part of Namibia's 2015 national feamle chess team. She amassing a total of 5 points out of 6 in double round-robin tournament. Mentile was followed by Ruaha Shipindo in second place and Jolly Nepando in third.

Amateur players that took part in this year's tournament were treated to a special B-Section where they competed freely with players of the same skill level. No advanced players were permitted in this section and so young and old players that are recognized as beginners paired against each other and decided their own fate. Final year medical student  Onesmus Kamenje was crowned champion in of the B-Section after winning second place runner-up Fillemon Shatipamba and finishing with a score of 6/7. Shatipamba tied with Onesmus on points but lost on direct encounter on tiebreak. Long time junior player Mutago Hochobeb came in third in this section.
